Kaweka’s 2014 Hunting Season
The 2014 Kaweka Hunting season is well underway. Our first groups of hunters have had a fantastic time and finished up with some very impressive trophies. Our next group have just arrived and are absolutely buzzing about the days of hunting and fishing ahead of them. The summer months have certainly been very kind to us with good amounts of rainfall on a frequent basis! This means there has been plenty of feed around which appears to have correlation directly to antler growth, with some fantastic trophies on the ranch.
American Hunting Expos
This year we attended the Las Vegas SCI Convention, Dallas SCI Convention, Western Hunting Expo, Seattle Puget Sound Chapter Banquet and the South East Michigan Bow Hunters Chapter Banquet. Thank you to those of you who called into our booths! It was great to meet and catch up with many of you while we were over.
Fishing
Fishing is somewhat of an untapped resource here at Kaweka Hunting with one of the country’s top trout fishing rivers, the Mohaka River being located a short 10 min drive from the lodge. The Mohaka River and its excellent tributaries provide spectacular fishing for large Rainbow and Brown trout amongst scenery that is second to none. A further 5 river systems are in close proximity to the lodge and also provide great trout fishing. We recently had a couple of hunters shoot their stags early on in the week and they decided to spend the day down at the Mohaka where they had a very enjoyable day’s fishing.
Lodge Expansion
In January, the construction of three new rooms, which will be staff quarters began. Once completed, this will give us the ability to be able to host larger groups here at the lodge. The rooms are almost complete, with the final licks of paint going on as this newsletter is coming together! Also in the pipeline is the development is a new office and meeting room! These will link up to a covered outdoor entertainment area.
Special Delivery
We had to call up the expertise of our local helicopter pilot this week to retrieve a red stag that was shot in a area of the ranch that was particularly hard to get to. Flying conditions were perfect, without a cloud in the sky, and our clients had some spectacular views over the Kaweka Ranges.
