Shopping in New Zealand

Explore the many different shops that New Zealand has to offer

What trip to a faraway country is complete without an opportunity to shop for momentos of your vacation? Our ladies at Kaweka Hunting love to shop! They are happy to take non-hunting guests on a single day trip into Napier or to Lake Taupo. For those serious about shopping, a multi-day trip to Auckland or Wellington is recommended as a Kaweka Hunting touring option. If you prefer to jump on a plane and be met by one of our hostesses in a great shopping city, we can even arrange that too!

Local Shopping – Hawkes Bay – Less than an Hour Drive

The Hawke’s Bay region is well known for art with many talented craftspeople from sculptors to painters and weavers. Most popular with our guests are the ‘wool shop’ and Possum World. Napier city is famous for antiques with a few basic souvenir shops and upmarket clothing boutiques. Many of our guests enjoy a culinary shopping experience in Hawke’s Bay. The farmers market, cheese and chocolate factories, and the boutique culinary store at Selini Estates winery are hard to beat!

Lake Taupo – 2 Hour Drive

Taupo does have some shopping but is better renown for trout fishing and the impressive Huka Falls. Shopping here is mostly for souvenirs with some good new Zealand wool products, jade and wood turned items. Clothing is mostly chain stores! However, Taupo is a fantastic day trip to mix in a bit of shopping with some sightseeing. Walking through gardens and a drink or real coffee in one of the local waterfront cafes will appeal to anyone!

Wellington – Overnight Trip or 45 Minute Flight

Wellington is our capital city, and is a 5-hour drive through the wine region and quaint towns of the Wairarapa. It’s ideal for an overnight round trip or a one-way to or from camp. If you would prefer to fly, we can arrange for you to be met by our local Wellington hostess. Wellington is known as the ‘Arts’ centre of NZ so you will find many galleries and fun gift shops here. The city is loosely divided into shopping ‘quarters; for example, the Cuba Quarter has alternative clothing, while the Willis Quarter has designer clothing. The Lambton Quarter has concentrations of high street brands and chains, with the Thorndon Quarter focusing on home wares.

Auckland – Stopover or One Way Shopping Tour

Auckland is where your international flight ends/begins and so is an ideal stopover point for fashion savvy shopaholics! Get away from the main street and head into the satellite areas of Parnell and Ponsonby for high end designer jewellery and clothing from many of New Zealand’s most talented designers. These ‘villages’ are just a short cab ride from the centre of town and in their own right also have reputations for wonderful cafe’s and restaurants. Newmarket has great shopping for a wider range of upmarket chain stores and high street labels. Many of our post-hunt touring packages also have options of adding  a day or two in Auckland before you board your flight home.

Queenstown & Wanaka – Less Than One Hour from Thar & Chamois Hunting

Queenstown and Wanaka are within easy distance of our premier Tahr and Chamois hunting option at Cardrona. Many laid back and talented artists live in the Otago region and here you will find a wide array of galleries with art in all mediums, small contemporary jewellery stores, souvenir shops, and in Queenstown specifically you will find a few higher end stores with designer clothing labels and accessories. There are also many luxury day spas, adventure activities and sightseeing options in this area. In case you like to keep things ‘even’ we can assure you it would be easy to spend the same amount here on shopping and luxury as what your hunting companion spends on trophy heads!
